and includes a new expiration date

  • by which you must depart Canada

Leaving and returning to Canada

A visitor record gives you the status of a visitor in Canada and allows you to stay longer. However, this does not guarantee that you can re-enter Canada after leaving.

To return to Canada after traveling outside Canada or the United States, you need a valid entry document, such as a visitor visa or eTA.

A visitor record is for people who wish to extend your stay in Canada as a visitor or

Change the type of permit they hold

  • a study permit to a visitor record
  • a work permit to a visitor record

Who can apply for a visitor record

It is recommended that you apply at least 30 days before your current status expires if you wish to extend your stay or change your status (such as from international student or worker to visitor).

The expiry date for your status is on

Your passport stamp (not the date on your visitor visa)

  • If your passport does not have a stamp, it expires six months after you entered Canada
  • a work permit to a visitor record
