Labour Market Impact Assessment

What is a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)?

The LMIA is a document that Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) issues to employers that gives them permission to hire temporary workers.
ESDC will assess the employer’s LMIA application to determine the impact of hiring a temporary foreign worker on Canada’s job market. A positive or negative LMIA letter will be issued to the employer by ESDC. Your employer should give you a copy of this letter to include with your work permit application.
LMIAs are usually issued for a specific period of time, and the work permit issued will match that period. You will likely need a new LMIA to extend your work permit beyond this period
